Giving It Away For Free

This will be my last post for a couple days.  I am having surgery tomorrow.  However, like Arnold, "I'll be back".

Many concerned friends question me about the blog.  They feel by showing my thinking and intention in this public manner, I will diminish the potential for book sales.

I do not agree.

I've met Seth Godin at about twenty different conventions over the years, not that we are friends but he knows my name.  I agree with his marketing of publishing ideas.  "Throw the idea up on the blog, if you get comments or arguments, it stimulates even more ideas.  Edit the blog, then add new insights to the resulting book.  Market the book- in your mind-the author's mind-as a souvenir.  It has been my experience with blogs that the comments are sometimes even more interesting than the original post."  I want that input.

I have a friend named Marsha Collier who is THE expert on E Bay.  Back in the Miami Herald days, when I was the Employment Manager, Marsha was an up and coming, brilliant, young retail advertising account executive.  Present day, Marsha is a blogger..and oh, what a blogger. Nearly 28,000 followers!  I read her blogs when I get around to reading blogs but, I don't get to the blogs every day.  Whenever I see Marsha's new E Bay for Dummies, Twitter for Dummies, Facebook for Seniors for Dummies series, I buy them because I know the information I seek is in there, I know it is organized and I know it is enriched with feedback information.  The truth of the matter is I do not feel like scrolling web blogs searching for the one piece of information I want. When you get right down to it, I prefer print over Internet..but, I use all resources available to me.

Here is a wonderful video from Seth describing this very notion.

No, I don't think you diminish the sales of the book at all. I think Mike's story and his part that he plays in history is compelling. For the true miser, they would rather spend hours hunched over a laptop clicking through a zillion posts rather than buy the book and enjoy the read. But then again that was never your target market anyhow, because they weren't going to spend the money on the book to begin with!

Best of luck on the surgery and we look forward to your return.

I hope all goes well with your surgery. After seeing my brother go through so much with his feet after his accident, I'm certain you will pull through fine.

You are receiving great input on your writing through your blog. The variety of opinions makes it all worth while. If nobody responded you would not have a worthwhile project, nor people like myself that keep peeking in to follow the wonderful drama that is unfolding.

An old comment about our art from Henry James, "We work in the dark - we do what we can - we give what we have. Our doubt is our passion, and our passion is our task. The rest is the madness of art."

Thank you so much! ♥ You will be proud to know about my upcoming business hardcover (I even got a glowing review from Kathy Ireland). The "boys club" from the Miami Herald could have used this book!
It comes out in January: 'The Ultimate Online Customer Service Guide: How to Connect with your Customers to Sell More'
